Derek Peterson, Ph. D., chief technology officer, is responsible for Boingo's technical vision and strategy. Under his leadership, Boingo is pioneering the adoption and deployment of the latest IT and network technologies including Passpoint, network virtualization and convergence. He is directly responsible for building and operating Boingo's core technologies and systems, including web applications, client software, networks, authentication, billing, advertising, IPTV, business intelligence and IT infrastructure. Dr. Peterson has deep telecommunications experience as a consultant, engineer, product manager and executive. Prior to joining Boingo in 2011, he served in strategic product roles at Oracle driving global launch campaigns for LTE adoption and billing software solutions. He is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm and Operation Joint Endeavor, serving with the United States Air Force.

Dr. Peterson is a member of several industry and standards organizations including; Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) board member and co-chair, OnGo Alliance board member and treasurer, SoCalCIO advisor board chairman, MSP Alliance, WiFi Alliance and FCC CSRIC VIII. Dr. Peterson was named CTO of the Year by Los Angeles Business Journal in 2017, was identified as a 2015 and 2019 Fierce Wireless "Wireless Industry Executive to Watch.”, and Orbie CIO of the year for SoCalCIO in 2022.

Derek holds a BSCS from the University of Maryland, an MA in Ed/Tech from the AIU, and a Doctorate of Computer Science from Colorado Technical University. He is an adjunct professor for Southern Utah University and is an editor for the International Journal of Strategic Information Technology and Applications.
